Modern lighting defines the mood and structure of a room. From chandeliers and pendants to sconces and floor lamps, this guide helps you choose lighting by type, scale, and glow. Learn how to layer modern lighting for living rooms, dining spaces, bedrooms, and beyond.
A truly polished room layers all three.
Ambient
The foundation. A soft, diffused glow that sets the mood and makes the room feel warm, inviting, and effortlessly refined.
Accent
The highlight. Targeted light that showcases art, architectural details, and curated objects, adding depth and dimension throughout the space.
Scale:
In larger spaces or with higher ceilings, choose a more substantial silhouette to create presence and balance.
Purpose:
Layer ambient glow with task and accent lighting to shape the space and highlight what matters most.
Aesthetic:
Select finishes and forms that echo your decor, then elevate it with a statement piece that feels curated and intentional.
Layering light at varied heights creates a space that feels calm, polished, and beautifully considered.
chandeliers
The room’s signature piece
A chandelier draws the eye upward and sets the tone with sculptural light. Choose a bold silhouette to anchor the room and add instant polish.
Right size. Right height. A fixture that feels balanced and intentional.
Average bedroom 12x12 = 24" D, Large Bedroom: 14x16 = 30"D Average Living Room: 12x18 = 30"D, Large Living Room: 15x20 = 35" D Average Dining Room: 12x14 = 26"D, Large Dining Room: 15x20 = 35"D
Right size. Right height. A fixture that feels balanced and intentional.
Size: 1/2–3/4 the width of your coffee table or seating area. Height: Keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 ft from the floor.
Size: Queen 20–25 D, King 25–36 diameter. Height: Hang so it sits at least 6D above seated head height.
Size: 1/2–3/4 the width of the table, leaving 6D clearance per side. Height: Hang 30–36D above the tabletop. Add 3D per extra foot of ceiling height.
You have the fixture. Now choose the glow. A few essentials will help you perfect the mood.
Layer a ceiling fixture with a floor lamp and table lamps for balanced light. Add wall sconces for soft perimeter glow and a more finished, designer look.
Choose a chandelier that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the width of your table. This keeps the fixture proportional and leaves comfortable visual space on each side.
Hang the bottom of the fixture about 30–36 inches above the tabletop for standard 8-foot ceilings. For taller ceilings, you can hang slightly higher for better scale.
For most islands, two medium pendants or three smaller pendants create balanced light. Aim for 8–12 inches of space between pendants and keep them centered over the island.
Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) feels softer and more flattering for living spaces and bedrooms. Neutral to cooler light (around 3500K–4000K) is better for task-heavy areas like kitchens and offices.
