Modern lightinG buying guide
Modern lighting defines the mood and structure of a room. From chandeliers and pendants to sconces and floor lamps, this guide helps you choose lighting by type, scale, and glow. Learn how to layer modern lighting for living rooms, dining spaces, bedrooms, and beyond.
TYPES OF MODERN LIGHTING
A truly polished room layers all three.
Ambient
The foundation. A soft, diffused glow that sets the mood and makes the room feel warm, inviting, and effortlessly refined.
Accent
The highlight. Targeted light that showcases art, architectural details, and curated objects, adding depth and dimension throughout the space.
How to Choose the Right Lighting
Scale:
In larger spaces or with higher ceilings, choose a more substantial silhouette to create presence and balance.
Purpose:
Layer ambient glow with task and accent lighting to shape the space and highlight what matters most.
Aesthetic:
Select finishes and forms that echo your decor, then elevate it with a statement piece that feels curated and intentional.
How to Hang Lighting Correctly
Layering light at varied heights creates a space that feels calm, polished, and beautifully considered.
Table Lamps
Choose a table lamp close to the height of the surface it sits on or slightly taller. Keep the shade about one-third the width of the table for balanced proportion.
Chandeliers
Choose a chandelier proportional to the room and furniture below. Queen bed 20–25 in diameter, King bed 25–36 in.
Pendants
Center pendants above the surface below and hang at least 30 inches above the tabletop or counter. Maintain clear sightlines while keeping the fixture visually grounded.
Electric Wall Sconces
Install sconces 60–66 inches from the floor for standard 8–9 foot ceilings. For taller ceilings, position them no lower than 7 feet to maintain proportion and visual harmony.
chandeliers
The room’s signature piece
A chandelier draws the eye upward and sets the tone with sculptural light. Choose a bold silhouette to anchor the room and add instant polish.

THE LIGHT BULB GUIDE
You have the fixture. Now choose the glow. A few essentials will help you perfect the mood.
WATTAGE
Wattage reflects energy use. For today’s LEDs, look to lumens for brightness, then select the lowest wattage that delivers it.
BRIGHTNESS
Brightness is measured in lumens. Higher lumens create a more luminous room, while lower lumens feel softer and more intimate.
COLOR TEMPERATURE
Color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K) and sets the tone of the light. Lower K reads warm and golden. Higher K reads crisp and cool.
Warm Light: 1000K–4000K
Rich and flattering. Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, dining, and anywhere you want a polished, candlelit feel.
Daylight: 5000K–6000K
Clean and balanced. Perfect for kitchens, offices, and spaces that benefit from bright clarity.
Cool Light: 7000K–10000K
Crisp and high-definition. Best for utility areas, garages, and task-heavy zones.
FAQs
Layer a ceiling fixture with a floor lamp and table lamps for balanced light. Add wall sconces for soft perimeter glow and a more finished, designer look.
Choose a chandelier that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the width of your table. This keeps the fixture proportional and leaves comfortable visual space on each side.
Hang the bottom of the fixture about 30–36 inches above the tabletop for standard 8-foot ceilings. For taller ceilings, you can hang slightly higher for better scale.
For most islands, two medium pendants or three smaller pendants create balanced light. Aim for 8–12 inches of space between pendants and keep them centered over the island.
Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) feels softer and more flattering for living spaces and bedrooms. Neutral to cooler light (around 3500K–4000K) is better for task-heavy areas like kitchens and offices.
